Know what your legislator is up to? Check Twitter

Here is a big reason why reporters need to Twitter and get hip to the latest cellphone technologies: The people they cover are already doing it.

Last Friday, several lawmakers decided to stay on the House floor after Congress adjourned to discuss energy. C-SPAN only broadcasts in session, so there would be no recording. So, as the New York Times reported this morning,

“Representative John Culberson, a Texas Republican and an avid user of the messaging site Twitter, acted as a citizen journalist covering the proceedings, albeit one with clear partisan intentions…

“As Republican members came to the floor to make speeches, Mr. Culberson, who called the event a “pep rally,” and Peter Hoekstra, Republican of Michigan,
posted frequent updates on Twitter.

“Mr. Culberson took it a step further, using his Nokia 95 cellphone to film fellow members speaking about the event…

“The videos were shared live on the Internet through the streaming video service Qik. They were also archived for later viewing, and Mr. Culberson’s 12-minute video of a news conference concluding the affair received 22,000 views.”
